Richard Johnson

Richard Johnson was twenty-one when fatherhood became his alone. His daughter Persephone was barely a month old when her mother left, in circumstances Richard has spoken about with unusual grace, suspecting postpartum depression and refusing to turn his story into a grievance against anyone. What he was left holding was a baby, a great deal of fear, and no manual.

So he built one. Terrified and, in his own words, not sure he could do it, he read every new-parent book he could get his hands on and logged more than a thousand hours of YouTube videos, teaching himself the lot, from how to braid hair to how to paint tiny nails to how to settle a baby at three in the morning. He found an online community of fathers called Life of Dad and realised, with some relief, that he was not the only young man quietly drowning and determined to swim anyway.

When Persephone was around ten months old, he wrote it all down in a long, raw Facebook post, the kind most people are too proud to publish, about how hard and how transforming it had been to become her dad. It went viral, hundreds of shares and tens of thousands of likes, because so many people recognised either themselves or the kind of father they wished they had had.

What makes Richard worth celebrating is not that he coped. Plenty of people cope. It is that he was honest about how close to the edge he had felt, and let other frightened young dads see that the fear and the love can live in the same person at the same time. He made single fatherhood look not effortless, which would have been a lie, but survivable, which was the truth somebody needed.

He has since written about new chapters, including a partner Persephone came to love. The early story stands on its own, though: a boy who became a father overnight and decided, against his own doubt, to be a good one.

We celebrate Richard Johnson for saying the quiet part out loud, and raising his girl anyway.
