What's on, with the kids

Upcoming days a dad and child can actually go to, in the big cities. The moment one passes it drops off, so this is only ever what is still to come.

A dad and child at an outdoor festival

Never yesterday's. Events drop off this page the day they finish, so what you see is always still to come. Each carries an honest editorial Dad Score, not user reviews.

Editorial, never crowd-sourced

Five useful questions. One score out of 100.

Every event is marked out of 20 on the same five axes, from how much of it you actually spend together to whether it survives a wet afternoon. The total is our editorial Dad Score, not a user-review average and never something an organiser can buy or edit.

United Kingdom

The British calendar is built for this: a summer of festivals and air shows, then a long festive run from the Blackpool switch-on through to Hogmanay. Most of these are a train ride from a major city, and a good half of them are free to walk into, which is why the value scores run high.

United States

American events go large and they go annual, so the same weekend comes round every year and you can plan a year ahead. Parades and state fairs are the strongest picks with young kids: free or cheap to attend, easy to leave early, and the spectacle does the work for you.

The Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze, Hudson Valley
18 Sept to 8 Nov 2026

The Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze, Hudson Valley

Van Cortlandt Manor, Croton-on-Hudson, NY

The Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze fills the grounds of historic Van Cortlandt Manor with over 7,000 hand-carved pumpkins, arranged into themed displays including a Wizard of Oz scene, a giant pumpkin Statue of Liberty, and a tribute to the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow. The walk runs across 44 nights between 18 September and 8 November, with an original soundtrack, food stalls, and a craft beer tent. It is a slow after-dark stroll rather than a ride or a show, so plan for cool evenings and a fair bit of walking on narrow paths.

Before you go

Questions dads actually ask

How far ahead should I book a family event?

For anything ticketed and seasonal, six to eight weeks. Christmas light trails, Winter Wonderland skating slots and Santa experiences sell their good evening slots first and leave you with a 4pm or a 9pm. Free street events like parades need no booking at all, but they do need you to arrive early enough to get a spot a small person can actually see from.

What age do big events start being fun rather than overwhelming?

Around three for parades, light trails and funfairs, where the spectacle carries it and you can leave whenever you like. Fireworks and air shows tend to land from about five, once loud noise reads as exciting rather than frightening. Every listing here carries a best-age note, and the age span pillar in the Dad Score marks down anything that only works for one narrow age.

How do I do a crowded event with one adult and one child?

Agree a meeting point out loud before you go in and point at it. Write your phone number on her wrist or put a card in her pocket. Take the buggy even past buggy age, because it is somewhere to sit, somewhere to put the coats, and a fixed landmark you can find in a crowd. Go early rather than staying late; the tired-and-hungry hour is what ruins a good day, not the event.

Are the free events actually any good?

Often the best ones. Notting Hill Carnival, the Lord Mayor's Show, Macy's Thanksgiving Parade and Blackpool Illuminations all cost nothing to attend and score highly with us precisely because the value pillar rewards that. The spend is travel, food and whatever she talks you into on the way out.

Why do events disappear from this page?

Because they have happened. The list filters by date, so the moment an event finishes it drops off and you never see a page advertising last month. Annual events keep the same URL year after year, so a bookmark or a link still works and simply updates to the next edition when dates are confirmed.

How is the Dad Score decided for an event?

The same five pillars as everything else on girl.dad: together time, low faff, value, age span and weatherproof, each marked out of 20. It is editorial, written by us with the reasoning shown on every listing, and it is never a user-review average and never something an organiser can pay for or edit.
