Questions dads ask about birthstones

Why do different lists give different stones for the same month?

Because there is more than one list. The modern list most jewellers use was standardised in 1912 and updated since; older traditional and mystical lists disagree, which is why you will see two or three stones offered for the same month. We lead with the modern list because that is what you will actually find in a shop.

Is a birthstone a good gift for a child?

It can be, with two caveats. Softer stones like opal and pearl scratch and chip easily, so they are a keepsake rather than everyday wear for a kid. And a pendant on a chain is a choking consideration for the under-fives, so most families wait or go for something that is not worn.

How much should a birthstone piece cost?

Far less than the jewellery trade would like. For a child, lab-created stones are chemically identical to mined ones, cost a fraction, and nobody can tell by looking. Save the natural stone for an eighteenth if it matters to you.

What if she does not like her stone?

Plenty of kids do not, and the month you were born is a poor guide to taste. Several months have more than one traditional stone, so there is usually an alternative with the same claim to the date. Otherwise her favourite colour beats a list from 1912.

Are birthstones meaningful or just marketing?

Both, honestly. The idea is genuinely old and turns up across several cultures, but the list most people use was set by an American jewellers' association, and commerce has shaped it since. We treat it as a pleasant bit of tradition to hang a gift on, not as anything more.
