The dad who went and built the medicine his daughter needed

Megan Crowley was fifteen months old when a doctor put a name to why she was not sitting up. Pompe disease, a rare neuromuscular disorder that thickens the heart and wastes the muscles. Her baby brother Patrick was diagnosed soon after. The prognosis was the kind no parent has a plan for: the children were unlikely to reach their second birthday, and there was no approved treatment to change that.

Most parents in that position are handed a role, which is to manage the decline. John Crowley declined the role. He was a businessman, not a scientist, and he went looking for anyone working on the problem. What he found was early research that had no money behind it and no obvious path to a child’s bedside.

So in 2000 he left his job and co-founded Novazyme Pharmaceuticals with the glycobiologist William Canfield, and set about doing the two things a father in that position can actually do: raise money and refuse to let the work stall. The company was acquired by Genzyme in 2001, and Crowley went with it to keep pushing the enzyme replacement work forward from inside a company that could finish it.

In January 2003, Megan and Patrick received the therapy. It reduced the size of their enlarged hearts and improved their muscle strength. They did not die at two. The treatment that came out of that line of research went on to reach thousands of people with Pompe disease who had no connection to the Crowley family at all, which is the part of the story that matters most and gets told least.

It became a book and then a film, and the Hollywood version does what Hollywood does. The truer version is smaller and harder: a father with no scientific training who decided the gap between what his daughter needed and what existed was a gap someone had to close, and that it might as well be him.

We celebrate John Crowley because he turned a death sentence into a deadline, and thousands of other families got to live on the other side of it.
