The single dad who turned a ponytail into a movement

When Philippe Morgese became a single father, he could manage almost everything except his daughter Emma’s hair. A ponytail defeated him. A braid felt like wizardry. So he did the only thing a stubborn dad can do: he practised, badly at first, until the mornings stopped ending in knots and tears.

Once he could braid, his friends started asking him to show them, and that planted an idea. In 2015, from Daytona Beach Shores in Florida, the then 33-year-old booked a room at a local academy and ran the first Daddy Daughter Hair Factory. It was a free class teaching seven other dads the basics he had taught himself: detangling, brushing, the plain ponytail, the three-strand braid, the standard bun. Everyone went home with a goody bag of hair ties and a little more confidence than they had walked in with.

The hairstyles were never really the point. The point was the message underneath them, that a dad doing his daughter’s hair is doing something that matters, and that no father should feel shut out of it for the want of a single lesson. Morgese kept it free on purpose, so that cost could never be the reason a dad stayed away.

What started as one class quietly became a travelling idea. Dads in other cities ran their own sessions and shared photos of lopsided first attempts turning into neat plaits. It is the girl dad ethos in its purest form: a small, practical skill, learned without ego, that turns a daily chore into ten quiet minutes of closeness.
