How to do a first ponytail
The ponytail is the one every dad needs, and it is easier than it looks once you stop fighting it. Here is the calm version: five steps, a couple of minutes, and a result that survives the school run.

- 1
Brush it out first
Get the knots out before you start, working from the ends up to the roots so you are not dragging at her scalp and starting a fuss. A quick mist of water helps.
- 2
Gather at the right height
Scoop the hair into one hand at the height you want. Higher and more central for a bouncy look, lower at the nape for something neater that survives a nap in the car.
- 3
Hold it tight
Keep the gathered hair firm in one hand and smooth any bumps on top with the other. Have the bobble already round your wrist so it is ready to go.
- 4
Loop the bobble
Pull the hair through the bobble twice, then on the third pass pull it only halfway for a quick bun, or all the way through for a ponytail.
- 5
Smooth and check
Run your free hand over the top to flatten flyaways, then check it is even from the back. A light spray of water tidies the last few strays.
Questions, answered
How do I stop it hurting her?
Brush from the ends up first, never yank from the roots, and do not pull the ponytail too tight at the scalp. A detangling spray and a soft brush remove most of the ouch.
Why does my ponytail go lumpy?
Bumps come from not smoothing the hair before you secure it. Keep the hair tight in one hand and run the other over the top before the bobble goes on. A damp hand helps too.
