What do you do when your daughter only wants mum?

It stings. You go to pick her up and she reaches past you for mum, or she cries when you do bedtime, or every question gets routed to the other parent. If you are a dad in the middle of this, here is the first thing to know: it is normal, it is a phase, and it is almost certainly not about you.

Why does my daughter only want mum?

Usually habit and biology, not a preference for life. If mum did more of the early feeding and settling, your daughter built her first strong attachment there, and small children cling to the familiar when they are tired, ill or overwhelmed. It is a sign of healthy attachment, not a verdict on you. Phases like this also come and go with no warning, often flipping to a dad phase a few months later.

Does it mean I am doing something wrong?

No. It is easy to read rejection into it, especially if you already worry about being a good dad. But a toddler reaching for the parent who happens to do more of the soothing is not a judgement, it is a reflex. The mistake is to pull back hurt, because that is the one thing that can turn a phase into a pattern.

What can I do when she only wants mum?

Stay in it without making it a battle. Keep doing the bath, the stories, the breakfast, even on the days she protests, because consistency slowly rebuilds the habit in your favour. Then find your own thing that is just yours, the Saturday swim, the walk to the bakery, the silly game only you play. A bit of regular one-on-one time, away from mum, does more than any grand gesture. The days out and experiences here are built for exactly that kind of just-us time.

How long does the only-wants-mum phase last?

There is no fixed answer, but most of these phases run in spells of weeks to a few months and then shift. The children who end up closest to their dads are very often the ones who went through a hard mum-only stretch with a father who kept showing up anyway.

How do I build my own bond with my daughter?

Make rituals that belong to the two of you. It does not need to be expensive or clever, it needs to be regular and reliably yours. Our father-daughter date ideas by age is a good place to start if you want a few that fit her stage.
